I took this on a service call. Gracie had already decided what she was doing that afternoon.

Most dogs in the Las Vegas Valley have some version of this figured out. The water is cool, the concrete is not, and the pool is right there. Some swim. Some just park at the edge until someone calls them for dinner. Gracie is clearly in the second camp.

A dog who uses the pool is not a problem. It does change what I pay attention to when I show up, and it changes what the pool needs. Here is what is actually going on.

## What Your Dog Brings Into the Water

Your dog is not exactly chemically neutral.

Every time Gracie wades in, she brings skin oils, dander, and fur into the water. Your pool's chlorine has to work through all of it before free chlorine can build up and actually keep the water safe. That gap between what goes in and what registers as free chlorine is called chlorine demand. With a double-coated breed like a husky, it is larger than most people realize.

Double-coated dogs shed constantly. A husky cooling off for 20 minutes puts more fur and dander into the water than a short-haired dog of the same size in the same amount of time. The water can look perfectly fine right after. The chemistry tells a different story.

Fur, dander, and skin oils are also phosphate sources. Phosphates are what algae feeds on, and a dog adds to that load through every swim. In Las Vegas, where chlorine is already under constant UV pressure through the summer, elevated phosphates and any gap in sanitization are usually all algae needs. ## The Filter Problem

Dog hair behaves differently in a filter than human hair does. It mats.

In a cartridge filter, dense fur can bind across the pleats and reduce flow before the pressure gauge shows anything wrong. In a sand filter, clumped fur can create channels that let water bypass the media entirely, which means water is moving through the system without actually being filtered. A husky is particularly talented at finding every pleat in a cartridge element.

The same thing happens in the pump basket. Fur mats across the basket openings and cuts flow before water even reaches the filter. I have seen pump baskets on dog accounts where nearly all the holes were covered with dog hair.

On accounts where a dog uses the pool regularly, I check the filter more often than I would otherwise. The pressure gauge alone is not enough. I pull the cartridge and look at it, because by the time pressure spikes, the filter has often already been compromised for a while. ## Las Vegas Makes It Harder

Summer in the Las Vegas Valley is already demanding on pool chemistry. The UV index hits 11 or 12 through the hottest months, and chlorine in an unshaded pool burns off fast. When a dog adds demand on top of that, a chlorine level that was holding fine in the morning may not be holding by afternoon.

This is why dog accounts in summer need closer attention, not just the same schedule. A pool can look clean and still be running short on free chlorine. Water clarity is not chemistry.

## What Changes on My End

When a dog is part of the picture, a few things shift in how I manage the pool.

Phosphates go to the top of my list. Most homeowners never hear about phosphates from their pool service because most services do not test for them consistently. I test for phosphates every couple of months. However, if there is a dog that enjoys pool lounging, I check once a month. Elevated phosphates explain a lot of recurring chemistry problems that are otherwise hard to trace.

The filter comes up sooner. Dog fur mats in ways that change how the filter is actually performing, and I have pulled cartridges on dog accounts that looked nothing like what I would expect to see at the same point in a normal service cycle. I check it before I expect to need to.

Service frequency is also worth revisiting. A pool on a weekly visit schedule that also has a dog swimming through June and July may need a closer look mid-week, or at minimum a quick check-in. The chemistry moves faster.

Whether a dog uses the pool should be part of how your service manages the chemistry. It changes what needs to be tested, when the filter gets pulled, and how often the pool needs attention. The adjustment is not dramatic, but it does require knowing what you are managing.
