Salt Water Pools in Las Vegas
Your salt cell is the most expensive part of your pool that you can protect or waste. Las Vegas water is hard on it. How long it lasts comes down to what happens week to week: whether the calcium is monitored and kept in check, whether the pH stays in range, whether anything is making the cell work harder than it should, and whether the cell is cleaned on a regular basis.

A Salt Pool Is a Chlorine Pool
Almost everything else follows from this, so it is worth getting straight first.
Your generator does not replace chlorine. It makes it. Water flows through a cell holding a stack of coated plates. Current runs across those plates and turns dissolved salt into chlorine. That chlorine cleans your pool exactly like chlorine poured from a jug.
So your pool needs the same chlorine level as any other pool. The same pH. The same alkalinity. It still needs testing every week. You did not buy a chlorine-free pool. You bought a machine that makes the chlorine for you.
About the salt itself: there is not much of it, far less than sea water, and most people cannot taste it. The process does not use it up. Salt only leaves when water leaves, through splash-out, backwashing, or draining. That is why your salt level drifts down slowly instead of dropping off a cliff.
Salt Pools Are Not Low-Maintenance Pools
People buy salt systems expecting less work, and part of that is true. You are not hauling jugs or dosing chlorine by hand. That convenience is real and it is why these systems sell.
What you take on in return is a piece of equipment with a service life, sitting in your plumbing, working every day. Ignore a salt pool and it gets into trouble like any other pool. It just takes a different road there.
Three things need attention that a chlorine-only pool never asks for:
Salt level. Too low and the cell cannot produce properly. Most will flag an error or just quietly underperform. Too high wastes salt and drives up total dissolved solids. The level drifts as water splashes out and gets topped up, so somebody has to check it and correct it.
There is no single right number, which is where a lot of bad salt advice comes from. The range depends on who made your cell:
- Pentair: 3,000 to 4,500 ppm
- Hayward: 2,700 to 3,400 ppm
- Hayward low-salt models: 1,200 to 1,800 ppm
- Jandy: 3,000 to 3,500 ppm
Those are different enough to matter. Run a Hayward at the number a Pentair wants and you are 1,000 ppm over. Anyone quoting you one universal salt figure is reading a generic chart instead of your equipment. Find out what you own before you add a bag of anything.
Cell condition. The plates scale up. That is the big one in this valley, and it gets its own section below.
pH. Making chlorine this way pushes pH up. Every salt pool does it. Your target does not change, though: aim for the same range as any other pool, covered in the pool chemistry guide. What changes is how often you are correcting it. Let pH run high and it causes two problems at once: it weakens the chlorine you have and it speeds up scale on the cell. The two feed each other.
Why Las Vegas Is Hard on Salt Cells
The water coming out of your hose is already alkaline and already full of calcium. Then summer evaporates it and leaves the calcium behind. That is what kills cells here.
Calcium settles onto the cell plates as scale. A scaled cell makes less chlorine. Your system keeps running and keeps reporting that it is working, while your pool gets less sanitizer than it needs. You cannot see any of this from the deck. What you notice is chlorine that will not hold.
The usual response is to turn the cell output up. That hides the problem for a while and makes the cell work harder for the same chlorine.
Two things protect a cell, and both are chemistry, not hardware:
- Managing calcium hardness. Scale comes from what is in the water. Every Las Vegas pool fights this one. Your cell is just the part that shows the damage first.
- Keeping pH in range. High pH builds scale faster.
Look after those two, keep the scale off the plates, and a salt cell in the Las Vegas Valley should give you 4 to 6 years. A cell that spends its life compensating for bad chemistry will not.
I do see failed cells here. Whether the water killed a particular one or the maintenance did is not always possible to tell after the fact, and on more than one occasion I have been able to point straight at the maintenance.
Chlorine Tabs Do Not Belong in a Salt Pool
Your pool makes its own chlorine. It does not need tabs, and adding them causes a specific, expensive problem.
Trichlor tabs carry cyanuric acid, or CYA. CYA builds up in the water and does not evaporate or burn off. The only way it leaves is by diluting the water. As CYA climbs, the chlorine your cell makes stops working as well, even though your test still reads the same number.
So the pool tests fine and behaves badly. The usual fix is to turn the cell output up. Now the cell runs harder every hour of every day, and you are spending cell life to cover a chemistry problem that came out of a bucket you never needed.
Las Vegas makes it worse. Our UV already forces you to watch CYA closely, so there is less room here than almost anywhere.
If someone is putting tabs in your salt pool, ask them why.
Cell Cleaning
Cleaning a cell means getting the calcium scale off the plates so it can make chlorine at full strength again.
The timing works like your filter: every 3 to 4 months, sooner if it needs it, and never past 6 months. But the cell decides, not the calendar. A clear cell does not need cleaning just because a date came around, and a cell that scaled up early should not be made to wait for one.
The plates underneath are titanium, and the part that actually makes your chlorine is a thin coating on them, usually ruthenium or iridium oxide. That coating is the cell. It is measured in microns, it does not grow back, and every bit of it you scrub away is chlorine the cell will never make again. Clean it too aggressively and you take life off the cell as surely as neglecting it would. This is a proper job, not a quick rinse.
On cost: cell cleaning is a flat charge separate from weekly service, the same as filter cleaning. It is occasional work, and plenty of pools have no cell at all, so it does not belong in everybody’s weekly rate. What Weekly Service Looks Like on a Salt Pool
Everything any pool gets: skimming, brushing, vacuuming when it needs it, basket checks, testing, balancing, and a written report after every visit.
Then the salt parts:
- Salt tested every 2 to 3 weeks, with my own kit. I do not take the reading off your panel. A panel reports what its sensor believes, and a scaled or aging sensor believes wrong, which is exactly when you need the number to be right.
- Cell checked for scale while it is still a cleaning job and not a replacement
- pH corrected, because salt pools climb
- CYA tracked, because it decides how hard your cell has to work
The goal is that your cell lasts as long as it should, and that you know what shape it is in before it starts falling behind.
